Karen Habercoss is currently the chief privacy officer for The University of Chicago Medicine and Biological Sciences Division. In this role, she is responsible for the enterprise multi-year strategy and day-to-day operations of The University of Chicago Health System privacy program. Her role covers a workforce of more than 20,000 staff, physicians, faculty, and students, encompassing an academic medical center, a community health and hospital division, offsite ambulatory clinics, faculty and affiliated physician practices, a medical school, human research subjects, and portions of the university supporting healthcare functions. Karen has a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work and a Master’s in Business Administration. She began her career as a licensed clinical social worker at The University of Chicago Medicine and moved into Compliance 10 years ago. Prior to her current role, she worked in the compliance department at The Joint Commission and as the corporate compliance and quality officer for PRS, LLC. Karen holds the following compliance certifications: CCEP, CHC, CHPC, and CHRC, CDPSE and she continues to maintain her LCSW and ACSW in clinical social work. She is also a member of the Chicago Health Executive Forum and the Chief network, which is exclusive to women executives. Karen speaks regularly on topics related to privacy implications of data use and disclosure as well as ways privacy and security teams can collaborate effectively.
