Over the last century, surveys of the landscape of American generosity have been dominated by a single feature: the longstanding year-over-year increase in the aggregate dollars Americans have given to tax-deductible nonprofit organizations. However, in 2022, the view from the top began to look different, with the total amount raised representing a decline of 8.4% from the year before in inflation-adjusted dollars; in 2023, total giving fell by another 2.1%.  

We have also seen a steady decline in the share of households giving to nonprofits dropping from 66.2% in 2000 to 49.6% in 2018 and a parallel decline in the rate of volunteering going from 27 percent of Americans in 2002 to 23 percent in 2021. 

In the face of these changes, the Generosity Commission was convened in October 2021 to better understand giving and volunteering today. The Generosity Commission, a group of leaders from across the charitable sector, is committed to celebrating and supporting everyday givers and volunteers in the United States while also illuminating the important role these social actors play in our society and recommending actions that could be taken by policymakers, business leaders, foundation officers, and nonprofit innovators to encourage their participation and contribute to growing their numbers. 

Join commission leaders, Mike Gianoni, President, CEO, and Vice Chairman, Blackbaud, and commission co-chair  Kenneth Hodder, national commander for Salvation Army and commission member, and John Tyler, general counsel and corporate secretary for Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, co-chair of the commission’s policy task force, for a moderated conversation hosted by Sally Ehrenfried, head of government relations, Blackbaud, on the commission’s report, which will be released on Tuesday, September 17.

But there is often little discussion of how portfolio management strategies can impact an officer’s ability to successfully take the prospect through the journey from qualification to solicitation to stewardship. What goes into portfolios has a lot to do with the results that come out of that portfolio—the same idea as "garbage in, garbage out" for databases. Utilizing data from the 150+ institutions in the Blackbaud Fundraiser Performance Management™ community, we'll take a look at a variety of factors to consider when creating a portfolio management strategy. In this session, we will define portfolio management practices such as hygiene, coverage, churn, composition, and review, and examine how each can help set up officers for greater success.

With over 80% of RENXT clients utilizing 4 or more third party applications, the need for an integration strategy is critical. Despite this, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of graduates with accounting degrees has decreased by 16% since 2019 and 76.3 percent of the total employed accountants and auditors in the U.S. are white. The Center for Audit Quality (CAQ) and EVERFI have partnered together on an accounting education initiative for high school students. This innovative curriculum exposes students to careers in accounting, with a goal to attract greater diversity and representation within the profession. 

In this multimedia- and discussion-based session, we will explore how EVERFI and CAQ worked together to design this engaging course and the in-school “Accounting for Your Future” signature events that bring what they learned to life and help create a lasting impact for students.

A direct result of a system-wide audit, the relationship puts every constituent in the scholarship process in the room together. This allows the stewardship officers to know how best to present scholarship opportunities to donors, Academics to have knowledge in order to help facility faculty questions and Financial Aid a chance to keep everyone in compliance before there is a real set-back. I would like the chance to present to other higher education professionals to explain how we have successfully obtained this relationship and have continued to maintain it. Last year in the panel session, there was a discussion of how there are so many silos in the process to get funding from a donor to a student. This presentation would give examples on how to break down those walls and allow communication (and trust) to all parties.
